In order for teachers to teach and students to learn, there must be a good environment. Students must be secure, comfortable and free of distractions in the classroom. How can a teacher teach when there is noise either outside or inside the classroom? Yet in many classrooms, there is a “noise in the classroom” called a LACK OF DISCIPLINE.

To solve this problem requires the participation of school administrators, teachers, school boards and parents. Parents are active stakeholders in their children’s education, for they want their children to learn. If the schools fail in doing that, parents should have the option of taking their children to private schools or home schooling them.

Parents also have the responsibility to make sure their child behaves in school and is courteous, respectful and responsible to others. Some schools blame and then label the child, to shift blame from themselves. Have schools provided discipline to this child or others, in order to make a good learning environment for all students?

Long ago, as a youth aid officer with the Saco Police Department, I discovered that juveniles who were in trouble with the police were also in trouble at home and at school and also had no relationship with God. Yes, some of them were also from homes where there was only a single parent present, usually the mother. I handled about 200 cases a year, imposing self-discipline on the juvenile in exchange for diversion from the juvenile justice system. Success was sweet and failure was bitter.

Discipline in our classrooms must be maintained by teachers and staff in our schools. Is discipline maintained in your child’s school?  Just ask your child!

I have been a school bus driver and a substitute teacher in our public schools and have seen lack of discipline, with no support from school administration.  In such an environment, why would bus drivers want to drive or teachers want to teach?  This becomes another reason for teachers, staff, students and parents to leave our public schools.

With our current educational situation, legislators will need to take action and that begins by electing David Corbett to Maine Senate District 32 on November 8th.

Together we can solve this!

Maine Senate Candidate
